Where do I apply for benefits like MaineCare (formerly Medicaid) and foodstamps? The Department of Health and Human Services has 16 regional offices located across the State. Applications for assistance can be picked up or you can call to have one mailed to you. Eligibility Specialists will review your application and help you complete it if needed. Locate the office closest to you. You may want to visit Bureau of Family Independence Web site. You may also download an application (Adobe PDF). I have relatives who can no longer care for themselves. How can I get them the care they need? There are a number of options available to help people who can no longer care for themselves. While for some this may mean entering an assisted living facility or nursing home, for many it may only require some additional assistance in the home. In either case, you can arrange to have a free assessment completed to determine what the needs are, and what programs may be available. The first step is a telephone screen to make sure an assessment is needed. Visit Care Choices for Maine Elders and Adults with Disabilities for information on the assessment process. I think someone is being abused, neglected, or exploited by someone else. Where can I get more information and help? Adult Protective Services can investigate the situation and determine if there is in fact any abuse, neglect or exploitation taking place, and can take steps to protect the person. The Prescription Drug Assistance Guide will help you decide what programs may apply to you. Where can I get help to find work? The Senior Community Service Employment Program is a training program sponsored by several agencies in Maine. This program provides part-time employment for people age 55 and over who meet income guidelines. One-Stop Career Centers, located throughout Maine, offer information, advice and job search assistance. For information on jobs with the State of Maine visit StateJobs. Who can I talk to about legal advice? Legal Services for the Elderly operates a 'hotline' for people who have legal questions. If needed, an attorney will make an appointment to meet with you to help with you concern. There are no fees charged. Can I get a ride to go to the doctor's office or to get groceries? There are transportation providers located in most areas of the state. Contact the one closest to you to find out what they offer for no or low cost. The Area Agencies on Aging may also help through their volunteer services. I am doing a school project on Maine's elderly - where can I get some information? A quick "snapshot" of Maine's elderly is available at Snapshot of Maine's Older Population Results of a recent survey area available at 2001 Survey of Maine Citizens. Other data sources include US Census 2000 Data as well as CMS Data and Statistics, available from CMS (formerly HCFA.) Where can I get information on Property Tax refunds? Maine Revenue Services administers the Maine Resident Tax and Rent Refund Program. You can get information and forms from their site. |
