"Toward Full Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities"

Inclusion - Regional Teams Information

These teams were formed during the three days at Sky-Hy Inclusion Retreat (June 2003). The teams are now in the process of formalizing plans to begin outreach into communities to gather allies around Inclusion. If you are interested in joining a team in your area please contact the listed contact for your geographic area.

Bangor Area Inclusion Team:

  1. Contact Peter Alexander at Peter.Alexander@maine.gov or Phone 941-4790.
  2. Individuals with disabilities, family members, and members of recreational, religious, educational, public safety, housing and other community organizations, and the business community are encouraged to consider joining this important team. Participation on Inclusion Team will offer members and consultants an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our community and to all of  its members. Thank you for time and consideration.

Coastal Inclusion Team:

  1. Contact: Deb Thibodeau at dthibodeau@u47.k12.me.us.
  2. This area team has met with a local school about supporting the start up of a civil right's team work on this has begun in conjuntion with the Attorney General Office. Indivdual interested in Inclusion in the Coastal Area are encouraged to join this team.

Portland Inclusion Team:

  1. Contact Lisa.D.Sturtevant@maine.gov.
  2. Our plan to educate and empower youth in Portland through existing Civil Rights Teams and cultivate natural supports and identify strengths within their schools and communities. The Team currently meets monthly in the Portland area. Our Current project is gathering and sharing stories of Inclusion in Southern Maine.

    - Resource Sharing
    - Developing Relationships
    - Sharing stories, knowledge and education
    - Mentoring

Presque Isle Inclusion Team:

  1. Contact: Gaynacook@gwi.net
  2. This small group has begun to expand and support people to connect to their communities as they transition from the Aroostook Residential Center into smaller homes in different communities. If you are interested in this group and their efforts contact Gayna.

Southern Maine Inclusion Team:

  1. Contact: Kathy.Son@umit.maine.edu
  2. This group has begun with outreach around both Employment and Spirituality. If you are interested in joining in this group connect with the listed contact for next meeting date.

Southern Oxford County Inclusion Team:

  1. Contact: Holly.Bricker@maine.gov
  2. Team meets monthly, planning, outreach, gathering of stories, has begun. Will be mapping community assets in the Norway area utilizing John McKnights' work beginning in late February. People interested in joining this effort are welcome.

Central Maine Inclusion Team:

  1. Contact person is DixieLeavit@gwi.net. Team Central meets monthly in the Gardiner area.
  2. The Team is currently meeting monthly gathering stories and will be beginning outreach in local schools within Diversity Days in April 2004.
    1. continue to develop allies by reaching out to organizations including the YMCA's(Lewiston/Auburn,  Augusta)
    2. Pursue training opportunity with the Disability Rights Center
    3. Coordinate speaking opportunity with Civil Rights Teams within the school systems
    4. Pursue training opportunity with Medical Care Development Staff
    5. Research housing development needs and
    6. Have fun!
