"Toward Full Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities" Developmental Services Inclusion - Jason's StoryMaking Friends - I have a great friend that I met this last year. Her name is Christine. One day I was hanging out with some friends outside on the steps and a woman walked by. She stopped and asked if we knew where she could get a “good chicken salad sandwich”. I offered to show her where the local deli was. We became friends from that moment. Last night her husband picked me up to watch the Super Bowl at their house. It was her son’s birthday-it was awesome! We’ve gone to the movies together, gotten together for dinner and attended church. I enjoy being with her and her family. Working on Awareness - Recently I traveled to Washington DC as a Transportation Collaborative Representative for a group working on accessible transportation in the Brunswick area. We attended training through Project Action on Transportation through the Easter Seals Society. Now, I get paid to consult with organizations on accessibility in my Community. I am also involved in speaking in my community about disability awareness. As a member of the Disability Awareness Committee of the AmeriCorps Volunteers Project I also consult on disability awareness and attend committee meetings. I am a new member of the Board of Directors for Independence Association for the next three years. Pursuing my Dreams - When moving to Maine eight years ago I wanted to live on my own and discover what I wanted to do. I have an interest in teaching others. I completed the Literacy Volunteers tutor training for teaching reading. I also would love to teach others to read music. I had a great teacher in New Jersey at my school who taught me about music when I was in chorus. I still play the keyboard and attend music jams at local restaurants in Brunswick. I’ve met people through this and want to take more lessons. I am also meeting with a teacher who is going to talk to me about what he does. I am interested in finding out more about this as a job. This has recently lead to me volunteering in a fifth grade classroom at Woodside Elementary to get more information about an Ed Tech position. I hope to be able to travel to new places with someone. I also would love to attend any of the Bruins, Celtics and Patriots games in Boston. |
