MTBE

Methyl tertiary butyl ether is a gasoline additive designed to reduce emissions from motor vehicles.  The use of "reformulated" gasoline containing MTBE was  discontinued in Maine after MTBE was detected in several wells.  The documents below give some general information on MTBE as well as an outline of state policy concerning this compound.
