Also, during 1999, EPA / ACE’s contractors initiated site activities for the Non-Time Critical Removal Action.
By the end of October 2000:
- Hazardous Materials & asbesto abatement in the mill buildings is complete
- Demolition of the mill buildings is complete
- Demolition of several buildings located on Route 7 (Newport Road and Maine Street) is complete
- Relocation of the Odd Fellows Hall building is nearly complete
- Relocaiton of utilities (sewer lines, water lines, etc.) is ongoing see photos
- Relocation of the East Branch of the sebasticook River is ongoing
- Relocation of the Route 7 bridge over the East Branch of the Sebasticook River and the bridge approaches is beginning - see photos
- Excavation and treatment of contaminated soils and sediments is ongoing
- Possible in situ treatment of contaminated soil at depth is being planned etc.
Note: More than 23,000 cubic yards of contaminated soils have been excavated, the majority of which are contaminated soils that have been stockpiled at the former mill complex area.
