Alternatives Assessment

  • Develop and implement alternatives assessment methodology for assessment of safer chemical alternatives to existing toxic chemical-based processes and products used in Massachusetts.  Lead author in Five Chemicals Alternatives Assessment Study completed in 2006 for the Massachusetts legislature. 
  • Manage and develop State Alternatives Assessment Forum designed for state technical assistance providers and chemicals use policy-makers to share methods and resources for conducting alternatives assessments.

Chemical Fact Sheets

Develop chemical fact sheets providing up to date information on environmental and human health effects associated with priority toxic chemicals, uses of the chemicals both nationally and in Massachusetts, and alternatives available for specific applications.

Academic Research

Manage the University research in sustainable technologies program.  Establish research focus areas, including research in green chemistry, safer alternatives to toxics used by Massachusetts industries, use of nanotechnology to eliminate use of toxics in materials, policy evaluations of toxic chemicals used in Massachusetts, etc.

Demonstrations of Cleaner Technology

Cleaner technology demonstrations at industry partner facilities.  Identify topic areas of specific interest to Massachusetts industry including implementation of TUR technologies, use of green chemistry in industry, energy and water conservation technologies and product redesign to assure competitive advantage.

Environmental Management Systems

Manage environmental management system peer mentoring work groups.  Identify EMS support needs in Massachusetts, identify host facility and participants, facilitate discussion topics and provide supporting materials as needed.  Assisted MassDEP in creating regulatory language and guidance for companies using their EMS as an alternative to TUR Plans

Training

Support other TURI program areas as needed to assure that industry perspective and expertise is provided in appropriate projects.  Areas include training in continuing education conferences, EMS training, policy evaluations, and coordination with community projects.

  • Provide regulatory compliance services to a variety of industries in New Hampshire and throughout New England.  Services included:  conduct regulatory compliance audits, develop Toxics Use Reduction Plans and associated reporting, develop other regulatory plans as requested by clients
  • Provide hazardous waste management training to clients throughout New England, in collaboration with other consulting firms.
