Media Advisory: Governor and Commissioner to Bestow Environmental Excellence Awards on Tuesday

NEWPORT ? Governor Paul R. LePage will join Maine Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Patricia Aho on Tuesday to announce the winners of the state-sponsored environmental excellence awards.

The 2014 Governor?s Awards for Environmental Excellence will be presented by the Governor and Commissioner in a ceremony at Vic Firth Company?s manufacturing facility in Newport to businesses in two workforce size categories as well as a nonprofit organization and a public entity that have gone beyond regulatory requirements to creatively initiate innovation and environmentally sustainable practices.

The Governor and Commissioner will also each speak about the interdependence of stewardship of Maine?s natural resources and a sustainable state economy.

Following the formal awards presentation, Vic Firth Company?s Director of Manufacturing David Crocker will lead a tour of the company?s production line, highlighting the economic benefits of instituting waste reduction practices and recycling efforts. The Vic Firth Company is a world-renowned drum stick manufacturer based in Newport.

The media is encouraged to attend and Commissioner Aho and representatives of each of the winning organizations as well as the host will be available to speak to the press following the awards presentations and prior to the facility tour.
