Toxics and Hazardous Waste Reduction Program (THWRP)

The Toxics and Hazardous Waste Reduction Program encourages businesses, and state and federal facilities to reduce or eliminate their use and release of toxic substances as well as their generation of hazardous waste. Reducing or eliminating toxics and hazardous waste within a process rather than treating it at the end of a process, also called Pollution Prevention (P2), leads to a cleaner environment, a safer workplace, and substantial cost savings!

Qualifying facilities in Maine are required to submit reports every two years and maintain a facility specific Pollution Prevention (P2) plan. Facilities include manufacturers of metal, wood, plastic, rubber, leather, paper, and textiles, dry cleaners, vehicle maintenance facilities and a variety of other businesses.

Reporting facilities can obtain and submit reporting forms here. Instructional information and advisory opinions are also available. Data posted from earlier reporting is also available here under respective Hazardous Waste, Use and Release categories.
