What is eco-tourism?

Eco-tourism is responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the wellbeing of local people. Ecotourism minimizes environmental impact and supports the local economy of a traveler's destination. In some cases, eco-tourism is associated with guided travel and environmental education, giving travelers a learning experience as well as an adventure. Across the globe, eco-tourists are a growing percentage of travelers.

Eco-tourism and Maine

Maine is a beautiful state with outdoor recreation and travel opportunities for eco-tourists in every region. Hiking, bird watching, and kayaking are all examples of ecotourist activities that attract visitors to Maine every year.

Tourists taking part in activities need to be aware of the delicate nature of their surroundings.
A few Basic Guidelines for ecotourists:

  • Learn about your destination before you get there. Read guidebooks, travel articles, histories, and/or novels by local authors. The knowledge gained will improve your traveling experience and contribute to your appreciation of the location.
  • Follow established guidelines. Ask your ecotour operator, guide and/or the local authorities what their guidelines are for limiting tourism's impact on the environment and local culture. Staying on trails, packing up your trash, and remaining set distances away from wildlife are a few ways to minimize your impact in sensitive areas.
  • Seek out and support locally owned businesses. Support local businesses during your ecotravels to ensure maximum community and conservation benefit from your tourist dollars

The International Ecotourism Society has information on planning an ecotourism vacation and ways to minimize environmental impact when traveling.

The Maine Audubon Society organizes educational birdwatching tours with minimal environmental impact.

The Maine Professional Guides Association is composed of Registered Maine Guides and the website contains links to guides throughout Maine.

Next time you travel, look for lodging that practices conservation.
