Yearly Savings and Reductions in Environmental Impact for Maine's Environmental Leader Lodging Businesses

 

Estimated savings and reductions in environmental impact for 97 businesses participating in the program include:

 

17,484,282 gallons of water through low flow water fixtures and for having a towel and/or linen re-use program;

10,171,620 kilowatts reduced just with energy efficiency initiatives;

104,862 kWh reduced per business;

$1,022,120 saved in electricity reduction initiatives (efficient lighting and appliances);

$10,537.32 average saved per business in quantifiable electricity reductions;

14,735,234 pounds of Green House Gas emissions from lighting with CFLs;

624 number of cars (in terms of carbon equivalents) that could be taken off the road due to use of efficient lighting by the certified businesses;

1,141,932 pounds of solid waste by composting food waste;

1,461,168 pounds of solid waste by recycling;

280,758 bottles reduced by installing refillable amenity dispensers from

29 of the certified businesses eliminating

16,845 pounds of plastic. This figure is from using a conservative 2 bottles per room estimate.

63 businesses have switched to using environmentally preferable cleaning chemicals resulting in

5,552 pounds of cleaning chemicals that would be considered toxic or hazardous.
