Poland Spring Accomplishments to Reduce Carbon Footprint

Poland Spring Bottling with facilities in Hollis and Poland Spring reported a 16% reduction in their carbon emissions from their 2003 baseline as a participant in both the Governor’s Carbon Challenge and STEP-UP programs.  This measure exceeds their 10% reduction goal set for 2010.  Among other initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint, Poland Spring Bottling recently announced their new Eco-Shape bottle, a lighter more environmentally friendly half-liter container with less plastic content.

A Maine-based water bottling business for more than 150 years, Poland Spring, and its parent company Nestle, continues to go green with their new ergonomically designed water bottles.  The bottles are made using 30% less plastic, feature 30% smaller labels, are flexible and 100% recyclable.  In addition, Poland Spring is building a new LEED certified bottling plant in Kingfield, Maine.  Poland Spring continues their use of biodiesel, B5 now that it is winter, and reportedly use more biofuel than any other Maine company.  Ron Dyer, Environmental Manager for Poland Spring, also reports a small improvement in miles per gallon when using biodiesel in place of conventional diesel.  “We have environmentally responsible manufacturing practices and are efficient users of water and energy.  Reducing the amount of plastic in our half-liter bottle is another big step in our long tradition and track record of environmental stewardship.”

Poland Spring is a participant in the Governor’s Carbon Challenge and a member of the Department of Environmental Protection’s STEP-UP program.  Both the Governor’s Carbon Challenge and STEP-UP programs are operated out of the Department’s Office of Innovation.
