Three Maine Environmental Leaders: Moody's Collision Centers of Biddeford, Gorham, and Scarborough
Moody’s Collision Center performs auto body repair in three southern Maine locations: Gorham, Scarborough and Biddeford. Moody’s is a participant in the Governor’s Carbon Challenge and has recently reported a 14% collective reduction in carbon emissions. Individual facility reductions are 9%, 19% and 11% respectively. They are on the right path to meet an aggressive goal of 50% carbon reduction by 2010.
Moody’s has worked with Efficiency Maine to improve their energy efficiency by installing more efficient (variable frequency drive) motors on their air compressors to run their air-powered tools, their spray booth equipment, and more efficient fluorescent lighting for the work areas too. All three businesses utilize radiant heat in the floors, and supplement with waste oil heaters in their Gorham and Scarborough facilities. Shawn Moody, the owner, participated in the 2008 Governor’s Energy Summit as a small business speaker.
Moody’s is also the first auto body business in Maine to achieve Environmental Leader status for its voluntary certification in the Maine Environmental Results program. This program assists auto body businesses to go beyond compliance and use pollution prevention technologies to reduce environmental impacts. Vacuum sanding systems for capturing particulate matter and computerized paint mixing systems for precisely determining paint job requirements (and minimizing waste) are examples of their pollution prevention practices.
Management for environmental performance is one of the many aspects of Moody’s small business. According to Shawn Moody, “We have long been believers in saving energy and conserving resources and we’ve found it actually makes not only environmental sense but economic sense as well. The programs in DEP’s Office of Innovation & Assistance are a great resource for us.” All coworkers own stock in the company and are directly impacted by reducing energy costs in the business.
Moody’s has been in the collision repair business for more than 30 years and grown to 48 employees. A fourth business location in Portland is currently under construction and scheduled for opening in November, 2008, with an additional 10-12 new jobs.
