Maine's Hannaford Supermarkets Participate and Excel in Governor's Carbon Challenge

With all of Hannaford Supermarkets 53 Maine facilities participating in the Governor’s Carbon Challenge, they have achieved an overall carbon emissions reduction of 16% from their individual baselines.  And their remarkable progress already exceeds their projected 2010 goal of a 15% reduction.  With stores from York to Machias, to Millinocket and Rumford, Hannaford’s Scarborough-based business is bringing greener business operations across much of Maine (as well as other states in the northeast region.)  Founded in Maine in 1883, it is the region’s largest certified organic supermarket.  Hannaford employs 26,000 associates in more than 155 stores.

Hannaford’s leadership in carbon emissions reductions in Maine is part of their commitment to implementing more energy efficient and sustainable business operations.  Hannaford’s success with other green initiatives includes greening their transportation fleet, use of biodiesel for heating fuel, and plans for more energy efficient stores.  The Hannaford fleet operations (100 tractors and 380 trailers) has cut fuel use and mileage under the Smartway Transportation Partnership, a voluntary program of the US EPA.  Their Camden store is heated with biodiesel fuel instead of #2 fuel oil.  Hannaford recently announced plans to build a new “green” LEED platinum-certified grocery store in Augusta (the first in the world,) incorporating solar photovoltaic panels, geothermal heating and cooling, high efficiency refrigeration, energy efficient lighting, a green roof, and an advanced recycling program.

The Governor’s Carbon Challenge is a voluntary goal-setting program to assist businesses and non-profit organizations accomplish their greenhouse gas emission reduction goals.
