MaineGeneral Health Reduces Carbon Emissions by 16% and Improves Energy Efficiency with Big Changes on Three Campuses
MaineGeneral Health has achieved a 16% reduction in carbon emissions while participating in the Governor’s Carbon Challenge which is 2 points off of their 2010 goal of 18%. This equates to 3,463 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalents. Director of Engineering, Mark Yerrick, says “We are pleased with our progress in cutting carbon emissions as part of the Governor’s Carbon Challenge. We look forward to meeting our 18 percent goal and doing our part to reduce greenhouse gases and be an environmental leader in our community.”
MaineGeneral’s three campuses, two in Waterville and one in Augusta have made major changes to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions including:
- installation of efficient/smaller boiler systems;
- replacement of all 480 windows at the Augusta MaineGeneral Medical Center;
- automating boiler systems and system setbacks at all three campuses, and reducing the need for high pressure steam;
- fuel use switch from #6 to #2 oil; and
- replacing appropriate transportation fleet vehicles with hybrid cars.
The Governor’s Carbon Challenge operated out of DEP’s Office of Innovation is a voluntary goal-setting program to assist businesses and non-profit organizations accomplish their greenhouse gas emission reduction goals.
