Fairchild Semiconductor is a Maine Environmental Leader Committed to Excellence

Fairchild Semiconductor is a “Maine Environmental Leader,” committed to excellence in the Governor’s Carbon Challenge, STEP-UP as well as other voluntary environmental programs.  Fairchild has achieved their initial 5% reduction goal in carbon emissions, and is demonstrating energy efficiency, environmental excellence, and innovation in product design and development in their business operations.  Fairchild is currently expanding its production capabilities by replacing 6-inch wafer tools with more efficient eight-inch wafer tools. These projects are driving energy and environmental efficiency by reducing the amount of raw materials going into the products, by utilizing alternative chemicals (such as clean gases) which have less of a global warming potential, and by upgrading the facility infrastructure with more efficient support equipment.

The South Portland facility has committed to reduce its actual greenhouse gas emissions, reduce generation of hazardous waste, reduce use of manufacturing chemicals, as well as improve the Long Creek watershed.  And as a corporation, Fairchild has also entered in agreement with the EPA Climate Leaders Program to reduce corporate greenhouse gas emissions by 30% (normalized to production) by 2010.   Fairchild Semiconductor is a leading global provider of semiconductor technology with a focus on improving energy efficiency in powering the products we use.  Fairchild has approximately 9,500 employees worldwide.
