Proper gravel road construction and maintenance are key in preventing erosion and soil loss. The Soil & Water Conservation Districts in collaboration with Maine Local Roads, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, as well as consultant road experts Phil Curtis and Russ Lanoie have developed a training workshop.

The emphasis of the training is on real world, hands-on training in erosion and sediment control on gravel roads. The workshops feature a classroom session followed by a field trip to see the Front Runner in use and to learn by getting behind the wheel, how to properly use this piece of equipment on a preselected gravel road.

Agenda. The following is the general agenda for the workshops which run from 8 am to 1 in the afternoon.

1) Gravel road construction & maintenance: a general overview
2) Locations, ditches, culverts, turnouts, spreaders, grading, materials
3) Regulatory factors
4) Participation in using the Front Runner on a gravel road with a trainer
