Maine has a number of laws designed to protect rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands, and groundwater, and all the values they support.
Waste Discharge Law. The waste discharge law regulates the discharge of pollutants, such as pesticides, to waters of the state.
Natural Resources Protection Act (NRPA). The NRPA regulates activities in, on, over, and sometimes adjacent to protected natural rivers such as lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands.
Shoreland Zoning (SZ). Shoreland Zoning regulates activity near protected natural resources through local ordinances.
Board of Pesticides Control. The Maine Board of Pesticides Control regulates the use of pesticides in Maine.
