Camp Roads

Camp roads provide access to your summer retreat but can also be a major source of sediment and other pollutants to lakes and streams if improperly constructed and/or maintained.

Storm events and dust from wind and vehicular use can deposit a large amount of material into nearby waterbodies.

Roadways need to be designed and maintained to shed water from its surface into nearby wooded areas, not to the lake.  Properly crowning the road or installing diversion devices is needed to accomplish this.  Road ditches and culvert crossings also need to be properly stabilized to prevent soil erosion.  Finally dust control on the road surface is essential during the dry summer months to prevent soil particles from being transported into water resources.

For more information on proper maintenance and design of camp roads, review  the Camp Road Maintenance Manual .  It has great information on how to keep your road in good shape.
