Children's Water Festivals (CWF)

Children's Water Festival Pages. The southern festival takes place every spring at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham or Portland, while the northern festival is every other fall (on even years) in Orono.  Have your class celebrate the value of water with a day long festival of water activities and presentations. Information on water issues is provided to kids and teachers, in an engaging setting, at no cost to the schools involved. With both the northern and southern festivals, kids will learn about the many aspects of water - its role in habitat preservation and use in meeting human needs; water quality protection for human health and ecosystems; the different forms water takes in the water cycle; and water conservation.

Lake Day

Lake Day Pages. You can create a sense of community by joining forces with DEP or your local lake association to develop a lake day at your school or local lake. Show appreciation of this valuable and well-loved resource by engaging all ages with a full day of lake activities (similar to a Family Lake Day). By circulating through a variety of stations, students will learn how they can help to protect their local watershed.

"Plant a Buffer! Projects

During the month of May, students can help to promote awareness of watershed protection through this service learning based program. "Plant a Buffer!" is an interactive day-long opportunity for your students to learn about soils, changes in our land uses and waterbodies, and what we can do to help protect our lakes, rivers, and streams. At the end of the day, the class will take part in a tree-planting activity on school property (The DEP will supply ~20 seedlings per class). Contact the DEP for more information on how to register your class.

School Visits

A member from DEP's Education and Outreach team or an AmeriCorps educator from the DEP may be available to come and present to your classroom. Click HERE to see the possible lesson plans. *We can work with you to determine what best suits your class needs.*
