Highlights of the 2002 Northern Maine Children's Water Festival
About The Day
Over 800 students attended the Northern Maine Festival in Orono on November 12th. The 5th and 6th grade students and their teachers learned about the value of clean water in its many forms. Featured were presentations by professionals in fields related to water: biologists, geologists, paper company engineers, water suppliers, foresters, and people from conservation groups. The students attended presentations, hands-on exhibits, quiz shows and a stage show, all with a water theme. The goal of the festival is to emphasize the importance of water to human and ecosystem health, as animal habitat, and its role in weather and other earth processes.
Not Just a One-Day Experience
Although this day is educational and fun for the students, we also hope to encourage further exploration of the many aspects of water. To this end, teachers are provided with classroom materials- donated books, curricula, posters and other items that come from our many sponsors. Teachers receive these as quiz show prizes and can select additional materials from the teacher resource area in the exhibit hall; prior to the festival teachers are sent lesson plans to help prepare their students for the upcoming festival.
