General Information About Stream and Watershed Ecology

  • Adopt-A-Stream Foundation. This organization in Washington State focuses on education, protection and habitat restoration (with a particular emphasis on the wild salmon, steelhead, and trout fisheries). An excellent publication available at this website is "Streamkeeper's Field Guide: Watershed Inventory and Stream Monitoring". 1999. Tom Murdoch, Martha Cheo, with Kate O'Laughlin. 299 pages.  The early chapters provide basic information on a wide range of topics about streams and watersheds. This book is well-written and is a good resource for people having a little or a lot of experience with streams. More information on Adopt-A Stream Foundation(offsite).
  • Gulf of Maine Aquarium. The "Streams" publication is a general stream ecology publication available free at this website. More information on gulf of Maine Aquarium (offsite).
  • Izaak Walton League of America-Save Our Streams Program. Save Our Streams is a national program focusing on education, monitoring, stewardship and restoration. A number of publications and resources are available for ordering at this site. More information on Izaak Walton League (offsite).
  • River Network. This is a national network supporting watershed and river education, protection, and restoration. Many excellent publications may be ordered from this website. More information on River Network (offsite).
  • Stream Corridor Restoration:  Principles, Processes, and Practices. 1998. Federal Interagency Stream Restoration Working Group (FISRWG). Chapters 1, 2, and 3 provide excellent background information about streams. This material covers a wide range of stream ecology topics. An electronic version of the book may downloaded or a printed copy may be ordered off of the Internet website. More information on Stream Corridor Restoration (offsite).
  • Volunteer Stream Monitoring: A Methods Manual. 1997. U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Water, EPA 841-B-97-003. 211 pages. The early chapters provide basic information about streams and watersheds. More information on "A Methods Manual" (offsite).
  • USEPA's Surf Your Watershed Website. A service to help you locate, use, and share environmental information about your watershed. More information on "Surf Your Watershed" (offsite).
  • USEPA's Watershed Academy Distance Learning (Internet-based) Program. The Academy gets into more detail about stream, watershed, pollution, and restoration topics than we do in our Stream Tour Slide Show. We recommend that you start with these modules: Stream Corridor Structure, Introduction to Watershed Ecology, Ohio's Virtual Watershed Tour, and Why Watersheds.
