Introduction

On September 8, 2005, the Board of Environmental Protection (BEP) voted to adopt new rules concerning water quality criteria for the discharge of toxic pollutants to surface waters of the State. These rules (Chapters 530 and 584) repeal and replace Chapter 530.5 that governed these topics since 1994. The new rules were adopted after a stakeholder process conducted by DEP staff, and a public hearing by the BEP. DEP contact:  Dennis Merrill (207-287-7788).

Chapter 530 addresses programmatic elements, including testing requirements, data evaluation, and potential impact assessment. Chapter 584 contains state-wide combined water quality criteria and provide methods for site-specific criteria to be adopted.

Some information is in Adobe pdf files.  If you cannot open pdf files, you can go to this site to download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.  Hardcopies of files in pdf may also be obtained from the staff contact listed.
