Introduction

The Department of Environmental Protection's Sand and Salt Pile Program is responsible for mitigating the effects on ground and drinking water from piles of uncovered salt and mixed sand/salt.

The program includes the creation of project priority lists; assistance with the siting of new sand/salt piles and buildings; an on-going registration program for sand/salt piles; implementation of siting and operational rules, and investigation of complaints involving chloride contamination of drinking water wells, as time and resources allow.

The Sand and Salt Pile Program is a cooperative effort of the The Maine Dept. of Transportation (DOT) and Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Priority lists

Project Priority List for Municipal and County Sand/Salt Storage Areas. This list is used by the Department of Transportation to distribute state reimbursement funds to municipalities and counties that construct sand/salt storage buildings.

Investigation of complaints

Complaints involving chloride contamination of drinking water wells are investigated as time and resources allow.
