LakeSmart - Workshops for Homeowners

NEW for 2006 - LakeSmart Walk 'N Talk

Taylor Pond Walk 'N Talk

This is a FREE two hour walk through of one or two properties with a host homeowner and an evaluator from SWCD or DEP. This program gives an introduction to the LakeSmart evaluation process and some of the basic principles of landscaping for lake protection. This event can be organized by a group of 6 to 12 people who may live on the same road or just interested members of a lake association. Contact Barb Welch 287-7682 , or your county Soil and Water Conservation District for more information.

Workshops

Homeowners may attend a FREE LakeSmart Workshop to learn more about actions that individuals can take to protect water quality. The workshops are hosted by lake associations.  The agenda includes classroom presentations on water quality problems in lakes, buffer design (vegetation that filters polluted stormwater), other best management practices for water quality protection and how the recognition program works.   There is a field trip to two locations, followed by a hands on exercise to design a LakeSmart plan of action for your property.  Participants are requested to bring a sketch of their yard for the design portion of the workshop. A meal is often included in the workshop.  The workshops generally last about five hours. The presenters are experts in water quality protection from the Lake and Watershed Management Associates and Maine DEP.

2006 LakeSmart Workshops

Workshop field trip at Pushaw lakeThere are two workshops planned for this summer.  Below is a tentative list of dates and locations.  Lake Associations may request a workshop as long as they can guarantee a minimum attendance of 20 people, they are committed to promoting LakeSmart for at least two years, they have a newsletter and media contacts, and they will help coordinate the scheduling of evaluations.  Preference is given to collaborations between lake associations for a regional workshop.  If less than 20 people have signed up as of the deadline, the workshop will be cancelled.  If your lake association or group is interested in hosting a workshop, please contact Barb Welch 287-7682 to be put on our waiting list.  You must register to attend any of these workshops by calling J.E.T.C.C. at (207) 253-8020 or by filling out the registration form (Adobe.pdf file) and mailing it to:
