Air toxics come from many sources, including stationary and mobile sources.

Maine Air Toxics Initiative (MATI)
Stakeholders and Subcommittees

There are three subcommittees of the ATAC:

  • Inventory Subcommittee - The most recent Air Toxics Priority List was based on 1999 emissions.  The Inventory Subcommittee is tasked with updating the air emissions inventory that is being used by the Maine Air Toxics Initiative (MATI inventory) so that it reflects current air toxics releases.
  • Toxicity Subcommittee - The Toxicity Subcommittee has determined the "toxicity factors" for each of the air toxics in the inventory.  The toxicity factors are multiplied against the emissions to produce a Toxicity Weighted Emission value.  Of specific note, the subcommittee developed recommendations as to how to access the toxicity of:
    • diesel particulate matter (DPM); and
    • polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polycyclic organic matter (POM).
  • Benchmarking Subcommittee - The Benchmarking Subcommittee is tasked with determining a mechanism to draw a line on the weighted Air Toxics Priority List, above which will be air toxics of concern, and below which will be air toxics that are currently not of concern.
