Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)
Legume Family (Fabaceae)

Habitat:

This plant grows in fields and lawns to a height of 3-12 inches.

Leaves:

Trifoliate, with oval- to diamond-shaped leaflets. They have distinct whitish markings and are larger than the leaves of White Clover.

Flowers:

Tiny, dark pink, and growing in rounded clusters. The clusters are generally larger than those of White Clover. Each flower is shaped like a little bird.

Helpful Tips:

Red Clover is not native to Maine. Brought here from Europe and Asia, it is found throughout North America. For more information, see Audubon Wildflower or Flora of Maine.
