Pussy Willows (Salix species)
Willow Family (Salicaceae)

Habitat:

This shrub grows in wet soils and along the forest's edge. It can grow to be as tall as 20 feet.

Leaves:

Alternately arranged, green on top and whitish underneath, with serrated margins.

Flowers:

Yellow or green catkins opening from silvery buds. Note: Pussy willows have male and female catkins on separate plants, as shown in the photos at right.

Helpful Tips:

Pussy Willows are native to Maine. They grow from Newfoundland south to Maryland and as far west as Idaho. For more information, see Audubon Trees or Flora of Maine.
