Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria)
Loosestrife Family (Lythraceae)

Habitat:

This plant grows in moist soils, in places such as wetlands and on roadsides. Its flowering stalks can reach a height of 4-5 feet.

Leaves:

Oppositely arranged, long and narrow, with smooth edges.

Flowers:

Small, purple-pink, with 4-6 wrinkled petals. The flowers grow in dense clusters along the stem.

Helpful Tips:

Purple Loosestrife is not native to Maine - in fact, it is considered a major threat to wetland environments. This non-native invasive plant originated in Europe and Asia. Each plant produces a massive number of tiny seeds that are spread by the wind. For more information, see Audubon Wildflower or Flora of Maine.
