Day-lily (Hemerocallis fulva)
Day-lily Family (Hemerocallidaceae)

Habitat:

This perennial is usually found growing in gardens or along roadsides.

Leaves:

Basal, 1-3 feet long, narrow and grass-like.

Flowers:

Orange, large and showy, with 6 sepals. Each flower lasts for one day, hence the name "Day-lily."

Fruit:

A brown capsule that cracks open, exposing the seeds.

Helpful Tips:

Day-lilies are not native to Maine. They were brought to the United States from Europe and Aisa. For more information, see Audubon Wildflower or Flora of Maine.
