Air Home > Compliance > Efforts and Goals

The Compliance Section efforts at achieving these goals include:

  • Regular communications and feedback to facilities with air emissions;
  • Providing on-site compliance assistance and compliance inspections;
  • Reviewing and analyzing emission information reported by emission facilities;
  • Monitoring emission analyses;
  • Responding to citizen complaints about air pollution;
  • Tracking compliance data; and
  • When appropriate, taking enforcement actions to address violations.

The Compliance Section's primary tasks are to assess compliance with the State of Maine air pollution control laws at regulated facilities and to provide assistance to these facilities to comply with or go beyond the requirements of the air pollution control laws that apply to them. Regular inspections, compliance assistance and enforcement of environmental requirements are key elements in gaining compliance. While a variety of tools exist for preventing and resolving compliance problems, the Bureau may pursue formal, written, and legally binding resolutions to environmental violations where corrective action and/or penalties are appropriate. Details about the compliance and enforcement process are found in the Bureau's Compliance and Enforcement Policy.

The major categories of emission sources that the Compliance Section deals with are:

  • Facilities with air emission licenses such as;
  • Pulp and paper mills;
  • Commercial and industrial boilers;
  • Power plants;
  • Rock crushers and asphalt plants;
  • Incinerators;
  • Petroleum terminals;
  • Vapor control systems at gasoline service stations;
  • Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from businesses that use solvents; and
  • Cleaning fluid emissions from dry cleaners.
