Maine Company Creating Electronic Docking Stations From Driftwood

AUGUSTA – Docksmith, producers of hand-crafted, custom-made cellphone and tablet docking stations, is one of the newest members of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development’s (DECD) Maine Made program. The company’s distinct products are created using driftwood, a beautiful and unique marine resource, and combine functionality with a sculpture-type quality.

“This is an example of Yankee Ingenuity at its finest,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “Docksmith’s resourcefulness and creativity in converting driftwood into sensible accessories for electronics is nothing short of amazing. I commend them for their innovative business concept and wish them every success.”

The idea for Docksmith was born when a simple gift was crafted for a family member who collected naturally aged wood and owned a smartphone. That moment of inspiration eventually led four friends to join together to create and sell the popular products at craft fairs and to launch a new small business in Maine.

Docksmith’s four owners—Katie Francis, Chris Francis, Olivia Turrell and Lee Goodwin—have since established workshops in Georgetown, Topsham and the Fort Andross Mill in Brunswick, Maine, and have developed dozens of unique models to satisfy the most discriminating consumers. Their products range from a singular iPhone 5 station to dual USB-port (non-iPhone) and tablet combinations.

To enhance its product marketing efforts, Docksmith recently joined DECD’s Maine Made Program. The program provides businesses access to unique branding and a distinct marketing advantage. Currently, the program has over 1,700 businesses enrolled throughout the state, with membership continuously growing.

“We heard from many trusted sources that the Maine Made program provides an excellent opportunity for small businesses to extend their reach,” said Katie Francis, one of Docksmith’s owners. “Participating in Maine Made’s website and being able to acquire and affix labels to our products identifying them as “Maine Made – America’s Best,” helps engender the type of high-quality, distinctive image that we aspire in our products and our company.”
