Bucking Hardwood for Maximum Log and Veneer Grades Workshop - New Limerick

Date: October 10, 2014
Time: 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM
Location: New Limerick, Maine

With the steady demand for high quality sawlogs and veneer, it is essential that producers maximize the log and veneer grades to obtain the maximum price for every tree cut. The workshop will focus on log grading and bucking principles that will help maximize the profits from your logging operation. The workshop will be led by Ron Fickett, Log Buyer @ Premium Log Yards. Ron has years of experience assessing defects in standing trees, scaling, and bucking logs for maximum value. Staff from the Maine Forest Service we will also discuss potential impacts and management implications of the Emerald ash borer - a destructive insect from Asia that has the potential to eliminate ash as a functioning part of our forests and landscapes. Although this insect has not yet been confirmed in Maine, detections of emerald ash borer are getting closer and closer to our borders.

The workshop will start at Never?s Wood Yard in New Limerick (pending), move to a local woodlot to assess standing trees for potential products, then onto lunch at the Houlton Community Golf Club, and concluding with an optional tour of the LP mill. Note ? lunch is included in this free workshop.

The workshop qualifies for SAF Continuing Education credits (pending) and Maine Pesticide Applicators credits (pending) Due to the workshop cosponsor, Maine SFI, there is not charge for this workshop.
