Mental Health
Upon the initial intake of each new resident, psychologists complete
a comprehensive assessment to include the intellectual level, attention
and memory span, verbal and perceptual skills, and personality
assessment, which includes how the resident gets along with others
and deals with stressors. Psychologists work with contracted medical
services provided by Correctional Medical Services, their psychiatrist,
and other treatment staff to develop and individualize programs
to overcome problem areas. Individual and group counseling are
provided, as are consultations with family, staff, educators and
other professionals to restore the optimum psychological and social
functioning of the resident.
Additional mental health services are provided by contracted agencies.
Acadia Hospital provides psychiatric services,
including psychiatric evaluations and medications when appropriate. The Charlotte
White Center provides individual and family therapy,
and Day
One provides
substance abuse evaluations and treatment for residents. The Charlotte White Center
and Day One jointly offer support groups for family members. All
of the mental health staff work closely with community agencies
to ensure integrated case management.
