Maine State Prison
The new Maine State Prison, now located in Warren Maine, opened in February 2002 and is a maximum security facility with a consistent population of around 900 prisoners. During the course of a year an average of over 230 different workers take part in the Prison Industries Program.
The Prison Industries Upholstery Shop is the home of the
state’s only PIECP
program, which is federally certified
allowing prisoner work for private enterprise. This is a
highly regulated program in which participating prisoners
contribute funds earned toward reimbursing the state for
their “room
and board” expenses, any crime restitution, and child
support.
With average program revenues exceeding 1.5 million annually this is primarily a self-funded operation and has been described by Washington D.C. consultants as “Unique to the Nation”.
The Maine State Prison Showroom, still located on Route 1 in Thomaston Maine (207-354-9237) is the largest retailer of over 600 crafted products, but there are also over 60 private vendors approved to resell prison made goods throughout the state.
The Showroom is open year round 7 days a week 9-5.
The
showroom offers a variety of new and popular items for the
tourist, and the home, as well as unique gift ideas.
Many items are also available at the Industries Outlet store at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham. Call 207-892-9354 for more information about the Outlet store.
