Maine State Prison

The new Maine State Prison, now located in Warren Maine, opened in February 2002 and is a maximum security facility with a consistent population of around 900 prisoners. During the course of a year an average of over 230 different workers take part in the Prison Industries Program.

The Prison Industries Upholstery Shop is the home of the state’s only PIECP program, which is federally certified allowing prisoner work for private enterprise. This is a highly regulated program in which participating prisoners contribute funds earned toward reimbursing the state for their “room and board” expenses, any crime restitution, and child support.

With average program revenues exceeding 1.5 million annually this is primarily a self-funded operation and has been described by Washington D.C. consultants as “Unique to the Nation”.
