Visiting a Resident at the Women’s Reentry Center

Visiting prisoners at the WRC is encouraged to allow residents opportunities to reunify with relatives and friends and to engage with professional visits with an attorney or other representative of a legal advocacy organization. Visitor guidelines assist MDOC with maintaining safe, secure, and orderly management of the facility.

Visitors should be aware that the option to participate in a scheduled visit is the resident's.

VISITING HOURS:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 6:15 – 8:15 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 2:15 – 4:15 and 6:15-8:15 p.m.

Visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance by calling 207-561-5027. Sunday and Monday visits must be scheduled by 2 p.m. on Friday.

Please note: Only persons pre-approved for visits are allowed to participate in visiting hours. Applications are available from the resident you will be visiting, from the WRC, or you can download the application.

Make certain to sign the application form before returning it to WRC for processing. It might take up to six (6) weeks for processing, or longer if the applicant has a criminal record.

Visitors may be on only one resident’s approved visit list (with exceptions allowed for immediate family members).

Visitation Guidelines

  • Do not arrive more than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled visit time.
  • The Dorothea Dix grounds are no smoking. Therefore, we appreciate your cooperation in not smoking anywhere on the grounds or buildings.
  • Leave all personal items, including cell phones, in your car. No cameras are allowed. A coat rack will be available in the lobby area for coats. You will need your state-issued, picture identification card with you.
  • Walk to the 102 Hogan Road entrance. Press the button next to the scan card reader labeled “DOC.” Be prepared to show your photo identification. Once we have confirmed your identification, you will be allowed to enter the building if you are on the approved visitors list. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn left as you exit the elevator.
  • Check in with an officer in the lobby area, and your keys will be securely stored for you prior to entering in the WRC.
  • With contact visits, a visitor and resident may embrace or kiss briefly at the beginning and end of the visit. Residents and visitors may hold hands during the remainder of the visit. Hands of the resident and visitor must be visible at all times. Unless otherwise restricted, residents may hold their minor children in their laps.
  • Nothing will be passed between the visitor and prisoner.
  • TOBACCO IS CONTRABAND and is prohibited.
  • An adult visitor must sit directly across from a resident. Only three or fewer visitors are allowed to visit a prisoner at any one time. Children under the age of four do not count as one of the three visitors.
  • Children under the age of 18, unless married or emancipated by court order must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is an adult.
  • There shall be no profane or loud lanuage.
  • Visitors are allowed to use the WRC visitor’s restroom either BEFORE or AFTER a visit. If a visitor or resident uses the restroom during the scheduled visit time, the visit will be terminated.
  • Residents and visitors are not allowed to move around the visit room or to converse with other prisoners.
  • Food, drinks, toys, candies, and gum from the outside are not allowed in the visit room. Clear baby bottles and clear training cups for infants and toddlers are permitted.
  • Outer clothing/apparel is not allowed into the visit room. Sweaters are permitted. A coat rack is available in the lobby. Other personal items should be left in the car.
  • Neither the resident not visitor will carry articles into the visit room. No resident property will be accepted by staff in connection with a visit without prior permission. If approved, the resident property will be left with security staff in the lobby. No funds will be accepted by staff or residents.
  • Adults will accompany children at all times and will be responsible for their behavior and safety.
    • Children’s books and toys are available and located on a bookcase in the visit room.
    • Each child will be allowed to go to the bookcase during the visit period and bring books or toys directly back to the visiting table.
    • Adult visitors are responsible for picking up and returning books and toys to the bookcase.
    • Children must be seated within the immediate vicinity of the parents or guardians. They may not sit unsupervised. They may not climb on furniture or disturb other visitors in any way, which includes yelling, screaming, or throwing things.
  • All visitors are required to dress in a reasonable fashion to ensure the good order of the visiting room.
  • In instances where clothing worn by a visitor comes into questions, the Security Commander on shift will determine if the visitor will be permitted to visit.
  • If the visit is not allowed, the visitor will be advised to leave the property.
  • Acceptable dress includes jeans and slacks, skirts, and dresses knee-length or longer, knee-length shorts, tops and shirts that are loose fitting and completely cover the upper torso. Visitors are prohibited from wearing gym shorts, boxer shorts, short-shorts, any clothing item with rips, tears, or holes bare midriffs, half shirts, halter-tops, tank tops, pajamas, lingerie, or see-through clothing of any kind. Also prohibited are any clothing making reference to drugs, sex, violence, or with vulgar or obscene language.
  • ALL VISITORS ARE SUBJECT TO SEARCH. All persons are subject to search prior to and as a condition for visiting. This includes minor children. Persons found to be trafficking contraband will be suspended from visiting and may face criminal prosecution.
  • Persons suspected of carrying a weapon, who appear to have been drinking intoxicants, or who appear to be under the influence of a controlled substance will not be admitted. Consuming or possessing alcohol or drugs on State property is a violation of State law.
  • No person currently in service of a sentence will be permitted to visit. Ex-offenders must apply in writing to the Chief Administrative Officer one year after completion of their sentence before being allowed to visit.
  • Prisoners may be restricted to non-contact visitation as outlined in Department Policy 21.4. This may include when a prisoner is found guilty of a disciplinary drug, tobacco, or contraband violation.
