Course Objectives: You will step through a process to design a relational database including determining the database purpose, review existing data and determine data requirements. You will learn the basics of database normalization to improve the performance of databases. Student will have opportunities to work through the database design process in their own databases. Additionally students will create queries in design view including select, parameter, and action queries; create forms to display and enter data into tables; create reports, subreports, and mailing label reports. Students will also learn to integrate Microsoft® Office Access 2003 with other applications. Throughout the class, students will be expected to work on their own databases in addition to examples in the student materials. Students should be prepared with details about their database requirements and a copy of their existing database if possible.
Performance-Based Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- follow the steps required to properly design a simple database
- describe and implement database normalization through third normal form
- create a new database with multiple related tables
- describe and implement referential integrity to table relationships
- control data entry by modifying the design of a table to streamline data entry and maintain data integrity.
- find and retrieve desired data by using filters
- modify query joins to extract unmatched data in two tables
- create self-joins in queries
- create parameter queries and action queries to add, update, and delete data
- enhance the appearance, data entry, and data access capabilities of your forms
- customize reports to better organize the displayed information and produce specific print layouts such as mailing labels
- use Access data in other applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel
Student prerequisites: Microsoft® Access 2003: Level 1 is a prerequisite for this course. Students taking this course are expected to be comfortable with: reviewing table relationships in the relationship window; creating simple one and two table queries using the Query Wizard; creating simple reports using the Report Wizard and making basic design changes to reports.
Target Student: Microsoft® Access 2003: Level 2 is designed for the person who wishes to learn intermediate-level operations of the Microsoft® Access program. The Level 2 course is for the individual whose job responsibilities include creating new databases, tables, and relationships, as well as working with and revising intermediate-level queries, forms, and reports. It also introduces the student to integrating Access data with other applications such as Microsoft® Word or Excel. This is a prerequisite to taking more advanced courses in Access 2003.
