C4C Partner Community since 1999

Yarmouth Community for Children:

The Yarmouth Community for Children celebrated its second anniversary in May 2001 with May Day Festivities that included a May Pole Dance, May Basket crafts, games for all ages, food, and music by the high school jazz ensemble.

The celebration capped a year of planning and activities. In the winter and spring of 2000 the Yarmouth C4C held community Round Table Discussions in collaboration with CHART, a substance abuse prevention group in the schools, to address issues facing youth in the community. In November 2000 the Steering Committee passed a mission statement and by-laws that had been months in the making as this grassroots organization gathered momentum. The group is currently working on short and long-term goals. The group also continues its outreach to teens. High school community service hours that count toward graduation requirements are available to participants.

Community activities organized or hosted by the Yarmouth C4C include participation in the Million Mom March activities in Portland (Mother’s Day 2000), a Community Picnic held in September 2000, and a Mark Brown Video Evening to complement a November 2000 speaking engagement at Yarmouth High School by this motivational speaker who helps kids understand the damage simple words and actions can cause. The group also conducted two Toys for Teens Drives in 1999 and 2000 and held a community-wide Pond Party in February 2001 that featured skating, valentines, games and music and drew 300 people. In May of 2001, Yarmouth C4C hosted an Eighth Grade Family Gathering to help students and families with the transition to high school and build a support network. This event was facilitated by Margaret Jones of Day One. The Yarmouth C4C receives in-kind donations from community businesses and churches.
