C4C Partner Community Since 1999

Windham Communities for Children:

In early 2000 the Windham School Aged Childcare Committee became a Communities for Children Partner Community. The initial project was a resource list of community services for the town’s telephone book. The group discovered that a local business, Tele-Cover Systems Inc., was already doing this and they provided assistance. The business agreed to provide the School Aged Childcare Committee a free ad on the cover of the local community phone book.

Using the C4C Planning Grant money, the Windham C4C then began to work with the Recreation Department to establish a swimming program for low-income community youth at St. Joseph’s College.

The collaboration with the Recreation Department goes back to 1997, when the Recreation Department administered a community survey on childcare needs. The School Aged Child Care Committee was originally formed in response to the results of the survey. In 1998, the School Department and a group called CADRE (Community Alcohol and Drug Resource Effort) administered the Search Institute Development Asset Survey. The Windham C4C uses results from both surveys to inform their efforts. The group continues to collaborate with the Recreation Department and the School Department. Youth members are also included on the board of the School Aged Child Care Committee.

Currently, the Windham C4C is working on fund raising to establish an after school child care program in space donated by the local schools as part of their development of childcare for this age group. The Community Phone Book cover ad is important to this effort.
