Community of Promise since January 2001
Waldo County Communities for Children:
Building Communities for Children (BCC) of Waldo County joined Communities for Children as a partner community in 1997 and became a Community of Promise in January 2001. The mission of BCC, which began in 1993, is "to create and maintain networks among families, communities, and service providers to promote the well being of children and implement interagency collaboration."
BCCs collaborating members comprise a list of 40 area agencies and groups of individuals. They include: the Area Youth-Mt. View BAHS in Searsport; the Abanaki Girl Scout Council; ASPIRE; Belfast Adult Education; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine; the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation; Child Care Resources; Career Center, CED, the Department of Human Services; the Maine Office of Substance Abuse Services; Eastern Maine Technical College; Expanding Opportunities; Goodwill Employment Services; Home Counselors, Inc.; Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County; local businesses; MSAD #34, #56, and #3; Mid-Coast Health and Family Planning; Mid-Coast Mental Health Center; New Hope for Women; Public Health Nursing, Family and Community Services; parents; Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention; Sweetser; The Game Loft; the University of Maine Cooperative Extension; WCGH Coastal Counseling Services; WIC; Waldo County Child Development; Waldo County Child and Parent Council; Waldo County Committee for Social Action; WCCSA Transportation; Waldo County Head Start; Waldo County Preschool and Family Services Teen Parent Program and their Family Support Program; and the YMCA.
Since becoming a C4C partner community, BCC has developed a services directory and distributed it countywide; received a grant to hire a program director for a new Dental Services Clinic for low-income residents and established the program; collaborated in the Tobacco Settlement Grant; acted as the advisory committee for SPICE (Students and Parents in Cooperative Education); and held a Youth Summit each year for the last three years.
In addition to the programs developed, a number of projects have been initiated by the BCC. For example, first grade students help manage a town clothing bank and fifth grade students have developed a nature trail. In May 2001, students at Mt. View slept in a box at the school to raise public awareness for the Safe Homes Project.
This C4C is using the 40 Developmental Assets model with the Five Promises to reach all children and young people in Waldo County. Most recently, they have piloted a mentoring program, the Safe Home Network, to provide safe places after school. The Safe Home Network board has youth representatives. Currently, the BCC is planning to utilize the C4C VISTA volunteer to develop a program that will provide safe alternatives for homeless youth.
