C4C Partner Community since 1997

River Valley Coalition of Rumford

The River Valley Communities for Children became a Community of Promise in February 2001.  It is sponsored by the River Valley Healthy Community Coalition.  This C4C community has organized an adolescent mentoring program called CAN DO, which brings 18 middle school girls together in a social setting with women leaders from the community.  In the summer of 2000, 82 children participated in the summer park program.  A free after school club meets weekly at Rumford Elementary School.  Big Brother and Big Sisters, a partner, serves more than 100 children in the River Valley communities.

River Valley Coalition continues to work in all school districts toward a comprehensive health education program.  All school districts in the region will receive funding secured by the coalition to hire a health coordinator and purchase needed curriculum and supplies addressing tobacco use, physical activity and poor nutrition.  The coalition has applied for funding to address underage drinking issues in the community.

A Community Forum was held on March 15,2001, to discuss community assets and needs around all youth issues.  A fundraiser was held in March 2001 for the free summer program.  The River Valley Coalition is currently working on a community fundraiser, "Bowl for Kids," to support the local Big Brothers Big Sisters programs.
