NACHME
C4C Partner Community since 1998
NACHME:
NACHME, which stands for Native American Children Healing Mother Earth, is located on Indian Island in the Old Town area. This community became a C4C partner in 1998. Since becoming involved with C4C, the youth in this community have had the opportunity to meeting with Colin Powell and usher at the Governor's Inauguration. The group has addressed issues such as, underage drinking, racism and building community. All of the youth in the group have been trained in the basics of Developmental Asset building and have had opportunities to share this knowledge with youth in other communities. They have conducted study circles related to youth sexuality, drinking, violence and communal responsibility and have been involved with several film projects. One project NACHME youth have worked on is the Youth Voices Task Force. As part of this project the youth created a video with Maine PBS that received a National Parents Choice Award and were honored for
this achievement by Governor Angus King at a ceremony at the Sugarloaf Resort. Since becoming involved with C4C, all of the youth in this group have been transformed into healthy, contributing members of this community. Not only do they have a sense of responsibility toward improving their own futures, but the future of the community as a whole.
