Lewiston/Auburn Communities for Children:

The Lewiston/Auburn Communities for Children became a Community of Promise in October 1999. It is sponsored by the United Way of Androscoggin County.

Advocates for Children gives children a healthy start through Healthy Families Androscoggin and provides support and education for new parents. Collaborators in this program includes Head Start, the YWCA, the University of Maine, Department of Human Services, Public Health Nursing, Child Protective Services, the City of Lewiston Health Department, Home Care and Hospices and three regional hospitals and health centers. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children with ongoing relationships with caring adults, and through a grant from the Lewiston Aspiration Fund, C4C hired a mentoring coordinator to work with them. The coordinator has matched 50 youth with adults and the program reaches 150 youth annually.

The Opportunity to Shine camp scholarship program allowed 900 students from Lewiston to attend summer camp. United Way of Androscoggin County, Lewiston Aspirations, L.L. Bean, LA Excels, and the Libra Foundation supported the program. In October 1999, participating students gave back to the community at a Day of Caring event. The program was repeated in the summer of 2000. The Maine Commission for Community Service is using a $1.4 million dollar grant to provide educational opportunities for youth who give back to the community. The Corporation for National Service, through AmeriCorps, and in cooperation with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, awards the grants as education awards for the part time AmeriCorps members who join this service learning oriented program.

The most recent effort of LA EXCELS is an attempt to bring the community together to participate in the development of early childhood programs. A recent conference, organized in part by the C4C VISTA member, was titled: "Early Childhood: Where Excellence Begins." This conference focused on three areas, including early childhood health, early care and education, and family support. Work plans were developed for all three areas and will define the future work of LA EXCELS on behalf of young children and their families.
