Community of Promise since October 1999
Gardiner Communities for Children:
The Gardiner Communities for Children became a Community of Promise in October of 1999. This C4C began its life as a community coalition with funding from Maines Office of Substance Abuse. The group has been active since 1995. It is currently based in the Gardiner Recreation Department and works with M.S.A.D. #11, the City of Gardiner, National Boys and Girls Clubs, Gardiner Public Library, Gardiner Police Department, Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center, Gardiner Sportsmans Club, and the Gardiner Rotary Club.
Gardiner has developed after school programs and summer programs for many of the youth from the surrounding areas. Currently, the Gardiner C4C is in the process of establishing a new Boys and Girls Club to serve middle school and high school students in an old railroad station located in the heart of the community that will reach a population of more than 900 11-18 year olds.
The Underage Drinking Task Force is working to change the norms around underage drinking in the community. The C4C is establishing performing and fine arts programs during out of school hours. Full service childcare programs are established in all elementary schools, serving 200+ children daily.
Gardiner has fulfilled all five promises for 200 youth. This Community of Promise has provided 350 youth with caring adults, 350 with safe places, 40 with a healthy start, 35 with a marketable skill, and 100 with an opportunity to give back to the community.
