Fort Kent Communities for Children:

The Fort Kent Communities for Children is sponsored by the St. John Valley PATCH, a health-based organization. They work with a variety of community organizations, including schools, the University of Maine at Fort Kent, Cooperative Extension and others, to improve the lives of children in the St. John Valley.

The C4C group donated funds (from the C4C Planning Grant) to "Destination Health 2000" on November 14, 2000. This was a health fair hosted by nursing students for elementary students in the St. John Valley to provide health education to elementary school children.

The group has also developed Interactive Drama training for elementary and high school students, grades 7 to 10, in the St. John Valley. Some of these youngsters are high-risk youth. Two facilitators, formerly with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, came to Ft. Kent from Orono and Portland to conduct the training. The training for students enabled them to give anti-tobacco presentations to peers, younger students and adults.

The St. John Valley PATCH (Ft. Kent C4C) is working on a resource guide for physical activities available in their area. The guides will be distributed free of charge as a resource for Americans and Canadians (Ft. Kent is on the border with Canada).

The Fort Kent C4C is also working to establish a Battered Women's Project Safe House in their area. This coming year, the group will focus on nutritional lunches and snacks in local schools. The Fort Kent Communities for Children has been involved with the St. John Patch health and well-being projects.
