CAPE ELIZABETH
Community for Children since 1998
Cape Elizabeth Community Coalition:
The Cape Elizabeth Community Coalition is a Communities for Children Partner and a Community of Promise. This group has partnered with the Cape Elizabeth School System to reach their goals.
The Cape Elizabeth C4C has provided safe places for youth and adults to discuss issues affecting the community. These dialogues are co-designed and co-facilitated by youth and adults. The topics are chosen to help the community build solutions and assets. Cape Elizabeth has focused its "Healthy Start" activities on substance abuse issues. Youth to youth mentoring programs have also been successful.
Several Members of the junior class helped to create the Senior Buddy Program which helps welcome incoming high school freshman. High school students are trained as discussion facilitators to work with 8th grade students to help prepare them for the transition to high school. This transition has always been particularly troublesome and this intervention is helping to create a safer, more respectful environment.
Cape Elizabeth is also beginning to train 7th grade students to facilitate conversations with 4th graders as they prepare to transition to middle school
.The Cape Elizabeth C4C has provided forums on safe places and a healthy start for large the student population. The major focus area in the past year had been work on the asset "Youth being valued" and on combating underage drinking. More than 30 youth have participated in community service activities. When a Cape Elizabeth student was killed in a drunk driving accident, the community was mobilized and ready to the support the youth impacted by this tragedy, and to open another round of discussion about substance abuse in Cape Elizabeth.
