Biddeford Communities for Children:
The Biddeford Communities for Children is unique in the sense that it was created by a Proclamation of the Biddeford City Council. The mayor of Biddeford has been instrumental in making sure that the Biddeford C4C also became a Community of Promise in November 1999. Two diverse groups of youth came together to work on the common goal of a larger centralized teen center, becoming involved in all aspects of its development. They have provided 100 teens with safe places.
In 2000, the Biddeford C4C received a $250,000 grant for five years to educate youth and their families about aspects of tobacco, nutrition and physical activity. They added an extra night to the Jump-start Program to increase the number of youth served. This program is an eight-week mentoring program run out of the Biddeford Police Department that teaches decision-making skills to youth who are first time non-violent juvenile offenders. The Biddeford C4C received funding for an additional program for youth in need of support services which will be run in conjunction with the Northern York County YMCA as well as the Biddeford Police Department. The Biddeford School Department is creating a community service requirement for graduation.
The Biddeford C4C is planning to provide Youth On Board training (youth leadership and empowerment) for at least four area teens and will create a Youth/Adult leadership council as an opportunity for youth to build their leadership skills to benefit the entire community. They are also planning to begin teen programming on local public access television that will be run by teens.
