How Do I....Get Registered to Charge Sales Tax, and How Does the Process Work?

In order to be in the business of buying and selling products in Maine, as well as renting automobiles and the sale of certain food and lodging, it is necessary to obtain a sales tax identification number or “seller’s certificate” from Maine Revenue Services. Sales tax is charged on most tangible items and fabrication services in Maine, but there are exceptions. You can get an application for tax registration and find out more about which items are taxable at the Maine Revenue Services website.

The Business Answers Program staff can also help you with Sales Tax questions. You are required to charge sales tax in most cases if you sell your product to an end user and the purchase takes place in Maine. You would not charge sales tax if you are selling to wholesalers or retailers, or if your product is purchased from outside of Maine (for example, over the internet). However, even if none of your sales were taxable, you would still be required to have a sales tax identification number in order to report these sales to Maine Revenue Services.
