Is this a secure site to use my credit card?Yes, absolutely. See Security Policy. If the permit requires two adults, can I burn with only one adult around? The on line burn permit system was designed to be a convenient and efficient means of obtaining a burn permit. We designed it to be as safe as possible, since most of the reported wildfires in Maine are the result of escaped brush pile or wood debris burns. It will not allow less stringent changes in the criteria for burning. If you can not meet the stated requirements to conduct a burn, then you will need to obtain a hand written burn permit from the local town fire warden. Our goal is to reduce the amount of wildfires in Maine and we appreciate your help by following the stated criteria on the burn permit. It is unlawful to do otherwise. Will this system cover commercial burning as well as residential?Yes it will. Can I obtain a burning permit twenty four hours a day, seven days a week?Yes you can. However, all open burning is allowable only after 5:00 p.m. and before 9:00 a.m., unless raining. If I pay my $ 7.00 and don't get around to conducting my burn can I use the permit at a later date? No, after completing the online process, a permit is good only for 48 hours and only after 5:00 p.m. and before 9:00 a.m., unless raining. Why can I only burn after 5:00 p.m. and before 9:00 a.m., unless raining?Nearly 94% of all wildfires in Maine occur after 9:00 a.m. and before 5:00 p.m., when winds and temperatures are generally at their highest levels and relative humidity is lower. What are class 1 and 2 days? The forest fire danger ranges from 1 (low) to 5 (extreme) and takes into consideration recent and long term rainfall, temperatures, wind speeds and relative humidity and other factors. The Maine Forest Service issues these fire danger ratings daily, and can be viewed by going to www.maineforestservice.org. Can I still get my burn permit from my local town forest fire warden at no cost?Yes. The online option provides way of obtaining an open burning permit from the convenience of your home, office or other computer station. What if I don't want to give my credit card information, can I still get my permit online? No, a credit card is the only way to purchase your open burning permit online. Do I still need to have a copy of my permit at the burn site?Yes, when you purchase your permit online you are required to print your permit and have a copy with you when conducting the burn. If I live in an unorganized town do I now have the option of getting my permit free from the Maine Forest Service or paying for one online?Yes, the same two options apply to both organized and unorganized towns in Maine. If I pay online for my permit am I still liable should my fire escape or cause damages?Yes. Whether you obtain your permit in person or go online you must meet all established criteria/safety requirements and maintain control of your fire at all times. Fires must also be dead out before leaving the site. When I purchase my permit online who is notified? Both the Maine Forest Service and your local town forest fire warden and other designated fire officials are immediately notified when the online purchase process is completed. Are online permits used to purchase campfire permits? No, only open burning of legal debris such as grass, leaves, brush and other allowable products/materials. What if I'm not sure if what I want to burn is allowable? The rules/guidelines for allowable open burning in Maine are posted on the first page of the online purchasing system. If unsure, please refer to these guidelines.
