“The timeline of base closures gives us the opportunity to transition from a position of strength. Maine ’s bases are terrific assets. We’ll work with communities to build the future.” Governor John E. Baldacci.

MSHA (Maine State Housing Authority) has made a $2M commitment toward work with local 501(c)(3) organizations to buy and rehabilitate affordable housing for workers in transition, boosting the local economy with construction funds while assisting in worker transition.

Governor Baldacci directed DECD Commissioner Jack Cashman to:

  • Immediately work with new and expanding businesses in affected communities, supported by $200,000 in prioritized funds under the Governor's Training Initiative (GTI) and Governor’s Contingency Fund;
  • Strategically focus available and expected jobs and transportation bond funds toward a coordinated stimulus package for affected regions, including: FAME’s economic recovery programs, the Small Enterprise Growth Fund, New Centuries Community grants, MSHA and MDOT’s construction and loan programs; and
  • Target additional economic stimulus efforts and tax incentives to these communities.
