Welcome to the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission

The Atlantic Salmon Commission oversees the management of a single species, Atlantic salmon.  This species once dominated Maine’s coastal rivers, migrating far inland in search of their natal waters.  Now less than 2000 fish return to an estimated 23 rivers.

The Maine legislature recognized the national significance of this fish and in doing so reestablished the Commission in 1998.  The Commission’s mission is to protect, preserve, enhance, restore and manage Atlantic salmon and their habitat; to secure a sustainable recreational fishery in the State; and to conduct and coordinate all projects involving research, planning, management, restoration or propagation of the Atlantic salmon.

We hope this website allows you to learn more about the efforts of the Commission and our partners as we strive to restore Atlantic salmon.
